Halfway between Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow the present Abington Hotel was built in 1896. In 1941 after the Clydebank Blitz, schoolchildren were evacuated to the safety of the school camp in Abington. Although the now owners MacBride family have been unable to find out how the hotel was used during the war.

After the war with more people owning motor cars touring holidays in the Scottish Borders became very popular. Doctors in Edinburgh and Glasgow recommended places such as Abington, Biggar and Moffat as healthy places to visit and the Abington Hotel was extended to meet increasing demand for good food and accommodation.

The old road is now by passed by the motorway but still close to the M74 and the A702 Biggar to Edinburgh road the Abington Hotel is now an even more popular overnight stop. Especially for businessmen and tourists wishing to break their journeys. The Abington Hotel is also popular with group organisers wanting a base to tour South Lanarkshire , Ayrshire and the Scottish Borders. And as the motorway connections improve, the Abington Hotel is becoming increasingly popular as a meeting hotel and conference venue.
